The universe must be created by a god and this god is insane. Somehow some of the most vocally abusive characters in the secular blogoshpere are now telling all other atheists how to speak. They are somehow self appointed experts of when you can threaten, shame and slander as they use these tools themselves. Anyone even questioning the fembot womynz are abused and kicked out of their forums. If you are a man who questions the party you will be banned (after being called a rape-appologisty and MRA) and if you are a woman who questions you will be called a gender traitor and shamed (or simply dismissed as being indoctrinated by the patriarchy).
Some time ago there was a South Park episode where the future was dominated by atheist governments fighting each other over which type of atheism was correct. I laughed and thought… “well… that is a bit of an exaggeration”. I think I was wrong in my first assessment. Welcome to the new world! In this new world a bunch of self-appointed behavior police will get to tell you what you can and cannot say.
I read in a book recently that there has been some complaining by some women in Norway that men’s bathrooms should not have urinals since this was obviously biased. Is this what the world is coming to? Is the politics of the Western world going to turn into a giant battle over proving who is the biggest victim? It looks likely to me.
On a bad day I feel the strong attraction of the pull of libertarianism and anarchy. I have this fantasy in my head that if I hunker down and just take care of my family that the rest of the corrupt and stupid world will not be my concern. Like I said…. it is just a fantasy.

To be honest, I had no idea what “MRA” even was. I had to ask around. Folks I asked didn’t know either. That’s what you get when you spend your time with folks who ditched pigeon holes a long time ago. Then it suddenly clicked – “men’s rights activist”.
And that is an insult? That it is wrong to want to expect rights if you’re male? Yes, we have the core of the issue right there… No rights, and how dare we expect them or talk back. Its perfectly clear now.

Hi Franc, love the blog. I too am another free thinker that is disgusted by the way the skeptical movement is being diverted to/corrupted by a radical feminist agenda by a select few.
While, I support feminist ideals and values, it has nothing to do with skepticism… not a goddamn thing!
And, I too am another long time reader of Myers’ blog that has given up Pharyngula.
FTR, I thought that “MRA” was an acronym for men’s rights asshole???
Anyway, I usually don’t post a reply to blogs, but I’ve been an avid reader of many of them for years.

Seriously, how much does it even have to do with actual feminism? As I keep repeating, it is other women in the community being spat upon and damaged far more than the males (we’re used to it anyway).
Saying Watsonistas are feminists is like saying Hitler was right wing – technically true, but hardly an indicator of the entire movement. This is why I prefer to call Watsonistas “slave moralists” – they debase feminism and undo all the work of the women that have actually made the hard yards.

But again I have to contest the notion that the feminism of Watson and PZ Myers is atypical in any sense. They absolutely do represent the movement. You can find a few people who reluctantly call themselves feminists on the margins of the movement who disagree with the sentiments of female supremacy that Watson and Myers embrace, but it is clear that those internal critics are the minority and on the way out of the movement.
You don’t get to dismissively call your opponents “gender traitors” if they are running the movement and you are in the minority. On the contrary the whole tactic of personal attack, appeal to authority, and dismissal instead of engaging in a debate is functional only if you perceive that you have the power to enforce a virtual blackout of that minority voice.
The whole dynamic we’re seeing is dependent upon the “bad” feminists running the whole show. So trying to pretend they are not only helps them and amounts to ignoring the problem (or at the least misclassifying it).
People really have a hard time coming out and admitting that the feminist movement went bad long ago. Why? it’s not based on the facts. Is it emotional blackmail? For sure if you question feminism you will be called a misogynist and a rapist (if male) or a “gender traitor” (if female). You’ll have to explain yourself every time (“I oppose feminism but I am not sexist…feminism is.”)
That doesn’t seem enough to me. After all we’re talking about the atheist / skeptic movement here. These are people who are already used to going their own way and paying the consequences.
I think it might be that people cant get over the identification of feminism with equality, even long past that ceased to be true, even as feminism now stands opposed to equality. That would certainly explain why people constantly want to say “no feminism is this” in the face of feminist bigotry, even when they don’t identify as feminists themselves.
Social movements are surely defined in terms of what they do and the beliefs and actions of the members – not outsiders, or how those outsiders want to feel comfortable about labeling the movement.
Take the term “MRA” used as a curse. If feminism was for equality then being an activist for men’s rights could not be seen as any different from being an activist for women’s rights. But the truth is we all know that feminism has always had that double meaning even before it went bad. It’s always been about more for women, advancing women, promoting women, and opposing men, blaming men, attacking men. And that was always sexist but everyone just ignored it and gave it a pass.
They gave it a pass partly because it was said that women really were the victims (as if that was men’s fault as individuals – collective punishment at best) and partly because women have always tended to attack and belittle men. The rot has always been there. These days there’s nothing but rot.
You can’t beat these supremacist by pretending they aren’t supremacists. You can say you agree with them and say they are wrong. You can’t try and say they are a fringe behaviour while they are running the show.
Talking of which today in Huff Post there’s a status quo article which (of course) 100% takes the Watson Myers view. In fact its so biased it literally doesn’t concede there is another side to the debate. if you are on the other side you are a rapist. You’re either a lovely caring equality person (Watson) or you’re a rapist. That framing works because they control the communication. So you better get over this idea that Watson’s views are a weak minority.

Also, I never state Watsonistas are a “weak minority” – everyone usually regrets knowing these kinds of maniacs at some point in time. You can’t walk around any major city or work in any office without encountering them either. Stand out like boils. What I am saying is that they are not a clear majority. Not by a long shot – by any measure other than sheer, shameless noise generation and ability to concoct moral panics. They successfully drown out and intimidate contrary opinion – much as Brownshirts did a long time ago (we have learned nothing and their tactics are essentially the same). It is the silence of the majority that allows the fascism of the minority create an illusion of being greater than what it really is. And thats all they are really good at – noise and self-promotion. And suckers still fall for it.

They have not debased feminism — they ARE feminism. The whole idea of feminism was already debased. The idea that you can get to gender equality by ceaselessly attacking one gender is already debased. Its sexist and self-contradictory. But that sentiment is representative.
And not just of feminism but our whole feminized society.
And that Hitler analogy again – Hitler ran Germany. He was elected. What does it mean to say he didn’t represent Germany at that time?

Point to me one single committee in the movement that is saying “we are concerned that anti-male sentiments are driving men from the movement” or something like that. It doesn’t exist and it couldn’t even be conceived of. Watson’s anti-male antics are taken seriously and given prominence instead. And who is opposing that line?
The best you can say is Watson sticks out in bringing a message which is 100% status quo. But she’s hardly running against the tide here.

Well, this is an argument you should be having with someone other than me. As a cosmopolite, I dismiss all -isms as counterproductive and stupid. I will accept blame for rhetorical generalisation though if that makes you feel better. There are very many women, probably the majority, that identify as “feminists” that are very, very pissed off at this circus *precisely* because it undermines their progress. It’s all language at the end of the day – I tend to use “slave moralists” to describe their mentality, but that term is not not readily grasped by many.

Look, we are in the realms of unquantifiables. Robert Anton Wilson once wrote “reality is what you can get away with”. The “majority” that read USA Today are about as meaningful as the “majority” that got emotionally involved with Friends. Not exactly thinkers and not exactly likely to be involved in “intellectual” secularism. Populism by definition is anti-intellectual and seeks to manipulate a “majority” position by appeals to stupidity. Despite everything that has transpired, I think that there are still a majority of smart, but “don’t make waves” quiet, folks in the godless/skeptic communities that see the charade for what it is. And they are slowly emerging.
Regardless of all of this, I may very well be pissing into a wind tunnel. But at least I am doing my bit. I refuse to submit to lollipops and lipstick fascism. But I do think that in the long term, this episode will be looked back upon with extreme embarassment. People have to make a stand.

If Watson isn’t the majority what do you think about this (from the Huff Post linked article):

So the message is – atheists might be 60% male but we think only females are worth hearing so we went out of our way to exclude all male voices. So its blatant sexism saying women are special and are preferred as to their intellect over men. Being born male is a bar to speaking because that maleness means you can have anything worth hearing — at least on that topic.
Did Watson and Myers set this up?

You can charge me as guilty of making assumptions – but my assumptions at least try and find some basis in observable realities. The Watsonista noise is generated primarily by a handful of professional loudmouths – most now conveniently housed at the farce that is FTB. The opposition, the moderates who have been roused out of their slumber and angry at being criminalised with such a broad brush, is far more widespread – and this is visible if you spend any time browsing blogs, forums and Youtube. It would be foolish money that bet on Watsonistas being representative of community views.
